Finnish research center to study one of world’s oldest beers
Beernews.org: In the summer of 2010 in the Åland archipelago, divers retrieved well-preserved bottles of champagne and five bottles of beer from the wreck of a ship that likely sank during the first half of 1800s. VTT Technical Research Centre of Finland will determine what kind of a recipe was used in the brewing of the beer and what kind of yeast caused the fermentation process. The beer in question is one of the world’s oldest preserved beers, and the Provincial Government of Åland is interested in its reproduction.

3rd Flights of Fancy shopping and wine tasting event heats up
Downtown New Haven on Friday, February 4th
New Haven, Conn- January 20, 2011 - Flights of Fancy, Downtown New Haven’s popular wine tasting and shopping event returns to the Elm City for its 3rd installment on Friday, February 4th, 2011 from 4 -8:30pm. The event, sponsored by The Wine Thief and the Shubert Theater and presented by the Broadway and Chapel Merchants Associations, features in-store wine tastings, special discounts and extraordinary giveaways at over 20 Downtown New Haven shops and boutiques.
Participants for the event can register at the Shubert Theater, 247 College Street, from 4 pm to 7 pm. A registration fee of $10 and includes: an exclusive Flights of Fancy wine glass, map of participating shops, entry into the grand prize drawing, FREE parking, heated trolley rides (to shuttle participants between the shopping districts throughout the evening), coffee and dessert.
During the event, participants will be able to sample fine wines courtesy of The Wine Thief (181 Crown Street) and receive 25% off their favorite item at participating stores in the Broadway and Chapel shopping districts.
Participating Flights of Fancy merchants include: archetype clothing, Ashley’s Ice Cream, Barnes & Noble Bookstore at Yale, Blue State Coffee, Campus Customs, Celtica, Claire’s Corner Copia, Denali, derek simpson … goldsmith, Enclave, Froyoworld, Hull’s Art Supply & Framing, idiom, Owl Shop, Peter Indorf Jewelers, Raggs, Seychelles, The Study Hotel at Yale, The Wine Thief, Thom Brown, Tracy b, Trailblazer, Tyco, Wave Gallery, Willoughby’s Coffee & Tea, and Yurway Designs.
At 8:15 pm, Flights of Fancy attendees can return to the Shubert Theater for Willoughby’s coffee, dessert, and a grand prize drawing for a complimentary stay for two at The Study Hotel at Yale. Additional prizes include: a cocktail class with John Ginnetti, owner and chief mixologist of 116 Crown; tickets to the 2011 New Haven Open at Yale; brunch for two at Bespoke, tickets to the Shubert Theater and more.
FREE parking is available at The York Street Garage (150 York Street) for all Flights of Fancy participants; just present your ticket during registration at the Shubert Theater for validation. Flights of Fancy is limited to the first 700 registrants, reservations are strongly encouraged.
